Babe says: Take it from the boys
November 10, 2009

Men's shirts! C'est ca!

Here are a few shots from a photoshoot I styled a while ago with Scott Lennon.

It’s a little Babe tip that when you’re sick of everything in your closet- grab something from his.

All that Morgan is wearing in these photos are classic men’s shirts. A white button down, and a grey wool sweater. Tied around her body in different ways, or pulled just so off her shoulder, I accessorized with a grand finale of hats!

C’est tres chic, and so easy breezy, if I do say so myself!

New Found Land!
October 23, 2009

We’d like to start by saying a big thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at Christmas at the Glacier!

We’re glad to be a part of it, and hope you stop by our blog from now on, we’re so glad to have you along!

As promised, we said we’d tell you our favourite places to shop while we’re in our hometown!

Here goes:

Twisted Sisters Boutique / 175 Water St: This is a great little spot to find Canadian designers and sweet little treats! Jewelry from Toronto based designers, shoes for us gals with addictions, and a fun selection of clothing.  Check it out, these gals sure know who and what to keep in their shop!

Home on Water / 156 Water St: When we lived here a few moons ago, we wished we lived here. In this shop.  It’s like walking into a magazine spread of a perfect world of soaps and lotions and decorative items.  It really does feel like home. Or at least, the home we long to own.

The Newfoundland Weavery / 177 Water St: Another favourite. A place to go to check out all the crafts and handmade items.  It’s beautiful in here, and full of cozy Newfoundland items, great throws, knick knacks and such. It’s lovely.

That’s all for now, Babes! See you soon!

How to Pack like a Babe
October 19, 2009

Good morning Babes!

Tomorrow I’m off to Newfoundland! Which means today I have to pack all of the things I need to survive in one bag. Easy. Done. I’ll just take money.

I wish! That would be the best way to travel, I always thought. So minimal, so easy breezy. A sweet dress, a jacket, and on the plane I go, only to arrive, deplane like a bombshell (step off onto the tarmac and air kiss to all of my adoring fans, as the tail of my coat blows in the wind).  Then I would just go shopping and buy new dresses and a toothbrush.

HOWEVER! It actually goes more like this: futile attempts are made to get all of my laundry done the night before, then I rush around like a squirrel gathering nuts all over my apartment trying to remember everything and counting how many pairs of socks I’ll need, (I’m always wrong), and then I decide I’m just going to take 2 dresses and a sweater. But wait! I need a book for the plane, my phone, the charger, a pen, an extra pen, a notepad, a lint brush? Maybe some lotion- oh and all my vitamins. And what about makeup?  …. you can see how this goes, when I get to looking at things in the kitchen, then I know I’ve gone too far. Why oh why wasn’t I born with a Martha know how for knowing what I’ll need?!?

So I’ve developed a new method. I had to. The stress was overwhelming.  It’s very scientific and can take years to do properly.

Just Kidding. It goes like this: Get a suitcase out a week before I leave and prop it open on the floor. As I remember things, I toss them into the open case. Then the night before, I arrange it properly.

I go into the bathroom and take the basics. I don’t take shampoo and liquids and all that, I just buy it when I get there (dreams do come true). I take basic makeup and a grey eyeliner.

I take one book, and my phone charger.

I lay out my clothes for the next morning. I never get a good sleep, because I am so excited, but I feel rested knowing that I havn’t forgotten anything.

Wait! The cat! Oh right, he has to stay home…

There was a turkey… and two mismatched shoes!
October 12, 2009

This weekend, my pals cooked a turkey dinner for all us lonely folk that didn’t get to spend the weekend with our families.

A feast for all, a feast for the eyes.

I wore a simple dress, and couldn’t decide which shoes to wear. This decision could take hours and still not be resolved even after charts, maps and notes have been drawn up on the subject.

So as not to keep the turkeys waiting (I mean, turkey), I just walked out the door, one of each shoe on, the other of each shoe laying hapharzdly on the floor, questioning what just happened.

There were funny looks on the streetcar and from all of my friends, and I wished I’d brought my maps and diagrams to fully explain my dilemma, but I thought “let ’em look, come on- take a gander!”

As for the turkey, he wasn’t fazed.

I’m thankful I have more than two pairs of shoes!

Where I LOVE to shop
October 7, 2009

Welcome back to the wonderful week of Toronto Treats!

This is my secret list of places that I go to get pieces for my wardrobe, things that I really truly adore. These stores are not just boutiques, but also galleries of art and fashion. Statement items are found everywhere and displayed just as wonderfully as the things themselves.

Here we go:

Charlie /809 Queen St West This is the place where I bought my tutu. Need I say more?  The few racks in this sparsely, yet elegantly decorated space are filled with interesting finds, many from Canadian designers. Tops, bottoms, coats, dresses, each item is more interesting than the last. The most recent item I bought from Charlie was a 100% silk dress with an asymetrical neckline, that was perfect for a recent Filipino folk dance gala I attended. The shop assistant is friendly, honest and helpful. I love this store.

Shopgirls /1342 Queen St West / shopgirls.ca A design collective featuring works by canadian artists and designers, this gallery boutique is just beautiful. It’s close to my apartment, and I love to pop in here for a gander, and have many items from their selection on my fall wish list.

Made You Look /1273 Queen St West  /madeyoulook.ca There are two stores: one on the north side of queen, and the other directly across the street on the south side. The south side is the one I am obsessed with. I love how all of the chunky necklaces have given me a need for adorning my neck with giant baubles.  My wardrobe will not be complete until I have the piece I so dearly covet from Buttercup Days.  This shop makes my day.

Love of Mine 781 Queen St West / loveofmineboutique.com This new boutique on Queen West is kind of what heaven looks like to me. The shop is stunning, and the pieces displayed everywhere are so beautiful I get tears of joy in my eyes.  Just thinking of the butterfly wall at the entrance sets my heart aflutter.  And for you personalized lovers of things, they also make custom name necklaces and rings.

So know you know how I look so fabulous! Because these places do what they do!
